Can a person Find God?

The idea of finding God implies someone is lost; either it is God, Himself, or the person doing the looking is lost.

To think of God as being lost is not true to reality. The Bible says "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. "Also God himself asked the question: "Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD." (Jeremiah 23:24) God is the creator of the universe. He is not lost.

Why do so many people ignore Him, or reject Him, or to even say, "There is no God"? The Bible says, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (Psalm 14)

God demands right living but each person's natural tendency is to sin and to hide from God. However, God's reality is evident everywhere. "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard." (Psalm 19)

Romans, Chapter 1 and II Peter 3 indicate that for some people, it is a deliberate ignorance.(Show Passage) {Note: this a long passage and rather blunt.}

No one can hide from God and God's demands forever. The Apostle, John, saw a vision of future events. "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20)

How can one have his/her name written in the book of life? God has made this possible by sending His Son Jesus, to die in our place He died that we might be delivered from the penalty of sin. He died and after three days, rose from the dead; He is now in heaven, preparing a place for all whose name is written in the book of life.

The Apostle Paul stated , "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. (Acts 16:31) He also stated, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9)

When a person realizes his/her own sinfulness, that Jesus, The Christ, died in his/her place and prays to God for forgiveness and accepts what Jesus has done, his/her name is written in the Book of Life. The person becomes a child of God and is given a new nature, a nature that wants to seek God, to pray to God, and to read and hear the Word of God. The person will want to be with God's people (in a Bible teaching church) and to leave the old life of sinfulness. We could then say, "The person has found God." Then, at the time physical death, the person will be with God forever in heaven.

Where does a church fit into the picture? In the New Testament a "Church" was an assembly of people that had recognized Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the "Promised One" who died for sinners. Each "member" realized his/her own sin and sinfulness and had accepted the death of Jesus Christ as having died for his/her sin. They had accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. These "believers" made up an assembly; they were a "Church." In later years, "Church" became an organized system with a central government which ultimately dominated both the religious, political, and cultural practices.

Today there are thousands of "Churches" across the world that pattern their assemblies according to the New Testament models. A Church Finder for Travelers lists hundreds of these churches. To find one near you that teaches the Word of God and proclaims its Truths, go to A Church Finder and enter your State and area. Travelers can use a highway as a search parameter. (I-10) or (Hwy-101), etc.

God has ordained that believers assemble together for worship, for hearing the Word proclaimed and taught, and for friendship with God's people. The believer is to hear God's Word taught accurately, and to be supported by people who also want to hear the Word and keep it. The church provides this fellowship with God's children; it is to teach the Word of God for encouragement and for knowledge of God's will, from His Word.

When choosing a church, ask these questions: Is it made up of people who love God? Does it proclaim His Message that all have sinned and need a Savior? Does it encourage the believers to follow God's will? Does it reach out to the needy? (Especially to those who need Jesus.)

The early apostles and believers assembled the first day of each week. If you are asking or have asked God to forgive your sin because Jesus died for your sin, you need to find a church that clearly teaches God's Word.

The churches listed with A Church Finder can help with a better understanding of what God has done for you and wants to do for you in the future. The Bible says, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together;"
